摘要Elevation gradients provide powerful tools to simulate warming climate conditions, because lower sites have warmer and drier microclimates. This study used transects descending three mountain ridges in the eastern Pamirs, Xinjiang, China. The inhabitants, Tajik national minority people, rely on transhumant pastoralism. We identified four plant species of especial concern to them: Saussurea glacialis, Pleurospermum lindleyanum (medicinal plants), Plantago lessingii (fodder) and Taraxacum pseudominutilobum (component of the ecological calendar). This study comprised climate recording, plant field surveys and three climate change simulation experiments. In greenhouse experiment one, seeds of S. glacialis and P. lessingii were grown then given a sequence of drought and grazing conditions. Seed viability was 15.8% for S. glacialis but 100% for P. lessingii. Modelling showed that 89% of S. glacialis seedling mortality was due to early simulated grazing, whereas 80% of P. lessingii seedling mortality was due to early simulated drought. Overall, 17.7 seedlings / parent of P. lessingii survived, while only < 0.1 seedlings / parent of S. glacialis survived. Future climate conditions in the Pamirs may threaten S. glacialis populations. In laboratory experiment two, intact soil monoliths were extracted from three elevations, then incubated under two temperature and two moisture treatments. Soil temperature affected both plants and soil, however the direction and magnitude of change differed between transects and elevations. Thus, mountain soils will differ in their response to warming. Notably, warming impacted both soil organic and inorganic carbon. In field experiment three, intact soil monoliths, containing the four focal plant species, were extracted from the top two elevations, then translocated to control and to three progressively lower elevation sites. S. glacialis and P. lindleyanum may continue to survive under warmer conditions. However, all four species produced fewer viable seeds. Warming shortened T. pseudominutilobum and P. lessingii’s growing season. The indicator species, T. pseudominutilobum, showed no shift in the phenology of its flowering.
