摘要 | Human-driven global climate change is one of the main threats to biodiversity in the 21st century. Owing to their complex geomorphic features, complete vegetation types and vertical zonation, and fragile ecosystem, Hengduan Mountains (one of the world’s 36 biodiversity hotspots) provide an ideal opportunity to study the effects of climate change on plant distribution patterns. Species distribution modelling (SDM) is an important tool for exploring species range dynamics under various climate change scenarios. However, SDMs have not been fully explored and applied in complex mountain systems. The key bottlenecks in building of SDMs for mountain systems include: limited technical capacity to obtain sufficient and accurate data (species distribution data, as well as the non-climatic environmental variables), and the over-reliance on a single model, particularly Maxent. In the present study, we selected the Hengduan Mountains as the study area. On the basis of boundary delimitation, we developed a fast and accurate method for obtaining species distribution data points, and subsequently integrating them with 15 classes of environmental variables. A total of 16 species were then selected to test and compare the performance of 9 SDMs in modelling plant distribution patterns under various climate change scenarios. This study establishes a detailed SDM procedure for the Hengduan Mountain, which lays a solid technical foundation for comprehensively exploring the potential mechanism of biodiversity dynamics under climate change, and could serve as a reference for SDM analyses in other mountain systems. The main findings and conclusions of this study are summarized as follows: 1. English name and boundary delineation of the Hengduan Mountains The use of poorly defined spatial scales in a given region potentially hinders the integration and comparison of data across, or even within, disciplines. We retrieved 1222 research papers related to Hengduan Mountains from Web of Science, and found that there are five English names for the Hengduan Mountains, with Hengduan Mountains being the most popular (994 papers). According to the international criteria for assigning geographic names, and in line with the “priority principle”, we suggested that “Hengduan Mountains” should be the internationally recognized standard name for the region. We comprehensively considered three criteria to define the boundary of the Hengduan Mountains: the geological tectonic assemblage, slope and relative relief, and mountain ecosystem integrity. As newly defined in the current study, the Hengduan Mountains span 5 provinces, 23 prefectures or regions, and 116 counties in China, as well as 1 state and 2 counties in Myanmar. The Hengduan Mountains stretch across 13.14 longitudinal (ca. 703.41 km) and 10.04 latitudinal (1113.11 km) degrees, with an area of 5.87 × 105 km2 and an average elevation of 3730.95 m. The interior of the Hengduan Mountains constitutes a unique landscape comprising |
