摘要Malania oleifera is an endangered tree species distributed in Yunnan and Guangxi. It can be used not only as an excellent restoration tree species in karst area, but also as valued resources for nervonic acid because of rich nervonic acid content in its seeds and thus known as "Chinese nervonic acid tree". However, limited wild resource along with difficulties encountered in artificial forestation greatly hinder the utilization of M. oleifera. In the practice of artificial forestation, low seedling survival has long been a major problem for forest farmers. One main reason for the lack of success in artificial forestation of M. oleifera is that the root hemiparasitic habit of M. oleifera has been neglected. M. oleifera is a root hemiparasitic tree. Although it retains photosynthetic capacity and nutrient absorption capacity and can grow independently for a period of time in the seedling stage, it still needs to form haustoria to establish vascular connection with a host to obtain water and nutrients for optimal growth. It is of great significance to explore nutrient requirement characteristics and host preference of M. oleifera seedlings for the development of M. oleifera planting industry. However, few studies have addressed nutrient management and host selection of M. oleifera. This study aimed to address the above-mentioned questions with M. oleifera seedlings of two different growth stages. The first growth stage (newly emerged seedlings) represents seedlings with rich seed nutrient reservoir, while the second growth stage (one year old seedlings) represents seedlings with much reduced seed nutrient reservoir. By applying different nutrient levels or planting different plant species with M. oleifera seedlings in pot cultivation, we explored suitable nutrient management strategy and determined ideal hosts for M. oleifera seedlings, providing theoretical reference and technical guidance for seedling cultivation and afforestation of M. oleifera. The main results are as below. (1) Seedlings of M. oleifera at the two growth stages responded differently to nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium supply levels. Despite that higher nitrogen supply level significantly increased seedling photosynthetic capacity, nutrient supply levels had no obvious effect on growth of the first growth stage seedlings. By contrast, increased nitrogen supply significantly improved leaf photosynthetic capacity and seedling growth at the second growth stage. Synergistic effect was observed between nitrogen and phosphorus supply levels on growth of the second stage seedlings. Potassium showed little effect on the tested seedlings. Therefore, nitrogen fertilizer application along with proper phosphorus supply is encouraged in cultivation and management of the second growth stage M. oleifera seedlings.
