摘要 | I. Molecular phylogenetic study of Ajugoideae As the third-largest subfamily of Lamiaceae, Ajugoideae comprises 23 genera and ca. 760 species disrtibuted all over the world, but mainly can be found in tropical regions. Previous phylogenetic studies of Ajugoideae mainly focused on several genera, such as Clerodendrum and Teucrium. So far, no study has been carried out for the whole subfamily based on a broad sampling. In this study, 50 species representing 22 out of 23 genera of Ajugoideae and four chloroplast DNA regions (matK, rbcL, rps16 and trnL-trnF) were selected to reconstruct the backbone phylogeny of the subfamily. Besides, two nuclear ribosomal DNA regions (ETS and ITS) and five chloroplast DNA regions (psbA-trnH, matK, rbcL, rps16 and trnL-trnF) were combined with the morphological data of mericarps and leaf indumentum to further resolve the phylogenetic relationships among Caryopteris, Schnabelia and their closest allies. Our main results are as follows: Firstly, based on the combined chloroplast DNA data, our phylogenetic reconstruction shows that Ajugoideae is monophyletic, and four well-supported clades (Clades I–IV) can be recognized within the subfamily. The four genera Glossocarya, Discretitheca, Rotheca and Karomia form the basal clade within Ajugoideae. Based on the molecular phylogenetic results, all 23 genera of Ajuoideae are assigned to four tribes. Tribe Rotheceae C.L. Xiang & F. Zhao, which is newly establish here, includes the four genera of the basal clade; Teucrieae consists of Schnabelia, Rubiteucris and Teucrium; Clerodendreae comprises 10 genera, including, Aegiphila, Amasonia, Clerodendrum, Hosea, Kalaharia, Monochilus, Oxera, Ovieda, Tetraclea and Volkameria; the remaining six genera, i.e. Ajuga, Amethystea, Caryopteris, Pseudocaryopteris, Trichostema and Tripora, are included in tribe Ajugeae. Secondly, the Chinese endemic genus Kinostemon are reduced to a synonym of Teucrium. A new combination is here proposed, i.e. Teucrium baokangensis C.L. Xiang, comb. nov. Thirdly, Schnabelia is shown to be monophyletic. The morphology of leaf indumentum and surface sculpturing of mericarps is of important taxonomic value for the infrageneric classification of Schanbelia. Based on the molecular phylogenetic and morphological evidence, Schanbelia is further divided into two subsections: S. sect. Schnabelia and S. sect. Cylindricaulis C.L. Xiang & H. Peng. Lastly, Caryopteris is monophyletic and is a sister group of the North American endemic genus Trichostema. The intrageneric relationships within Caryopteris are not fully resolved. Besides, discordances between nuclear gene tree and chloroplast gene tree were detected, which may be caused by hybridizations between some of the species. Moreover, both the molecular and morphological evidences support that C. forrestii var. minor should be raised to a species rank. Thus, a new combination is here proposed, i.e. Caryopteris minor (C. Pei & S.L. Chen ex C.Y. Wu) C.L. Xiang. comb. |
