摘要 | Medicinal plant knowledge of Myanmar's Mon people, who largely depend on traditional medical system for health care, is rarely studied. In this ethnobotanical study of Mon Traditional Medicinal plants (MTMs), we aimed to: 1) to document the diversity of MTMs and their therapeutic usages; 2) to quantitatively identify the most well-known MTMs and prevalent diseases treated by these species and to evaluate their status of research and application. We attempted to answer three research questions: 1) what species are used as MTMs and what diseases can be treated with these MTMs? 2) what are the general characteristics of the MTMs? 3) which species and their usages have high consensus of knowledge? Ethnobotanical surveys and interviews were carried out in 10 villages of four townships in Mon State. Data was collected from interviews with 131 informants chosen via the snowball sampling method. Therapeutic uses of medicinal plants were categorized into ICPC-2 standard. Quantitative indices for evaluating the consensus of knowledge including Use Reports (URs), and Fidelity Level (FL) were computed using the ethnobotanyR package. Voucher specimens were collected and identified by experts. In total, 158 medicinal plant species belonging to 64 families used by Mon people were recorded. Thirteen species were newly recorded as medicinal plants in Myanmar compared with previous studies. These medicinal plants were applied to 78 therapeutic uses classified into 16 ICPC-2 disease categories, with digestive (251 URs), urological (156 URs) and respiratory diseases (135 URs) ranking as the most prevalent diseases based on user reports. Fabaceae was the most represented family and leaf was the most commonly used plant part. Decoction and oral administration ranked top in preparation and administration methods respectively. Tinospora sinensis (Lour.) Merr (87 URs), the introduced species Chromolaena odorata (L.) R. M. King & H. Rob. (79 URs), Mimosa pudica L. (55 URs), Tadehagi triquetrum (L.) H. Ohashi (51 URs), Alysicarpus vaginalis (L.) DC (43 URs) were five most cited medicinal plant species for treating dysuria (71.74%), cuts and wounds (53.33%), cough (52.17%), diabetes (46%) and gall stone (31.53%) with high fidelity level (FL), respectively. The Mon people of Myanmar have a rich and diverse knowledge of traditional medicinal plants. The list of medicinal plants in Myanmar can be renewed with 13 more species added. MTMs is still functioning as an important component in the health care of Mon people in Myanmar, therefore a systematic documentation on the knowledge of MTMs is worthy in the future. Resource monitoring, phytochemical and pharmacological research and evidence-based drug development are suggested to promote the use of MTMs. |
